Welcome to Chemistry!

COURSE DESCRIPTION

CHEMISTRY
Grade level
: 10-12
Prerequisite: Algebra I with a grade of C or better
Length: one semester in block schedule (e.g., Chem A one quarter, Chem B one quarter)

Chemistry is an inquiry-based course designed to cover the basic concepts of general chemistry leading to the understanding of the composition, properties, and changes in matter.  This will be accomplished using a thematic, guided inquiry approach. Introductory principles covered in this course will include matter, atomic structure, bonding, molecular structure and properties, phase changes, behavior of gases, stoichiometry, solution chemistry, acids and bases, thermodynamic basics, reversible reactions, and chemical equilibrium. Laboratory and general activities that combine conceptual understanding with problem solving are integrated into this course. A large part of the course requires a comprehensive understanding of Algebra.

Note: Students that have successfully completed Chemistry may want to also take

  1. Advanced Chemistry (THS)/General Chemistry 806-134 (CVTC) and/or
  2. Biochemistry (THS)/Introduction to Biochemistry 806-186 (CVTC)

and earn college credits. If you have the slightest thought that you may sign up for Advanced Chemistry or Biochemistry, be sure to keep your Chemistry notebook(s). We will continue to use it as a study tool.

NECESSARY SUPPLIES

  • composition-style notebook(s), most students use two
  • pencil/pen
  • scientific calculator, similar to TI-30Xa
  • colored pencils and/or markers
  • scissors
  • glue

WHAT'S NEXT?

After completing Chemistry, you may choose to take Physical Science II and Physical Science III, or you may chose to take Physics.  Physical Science II will have a physics emphasis, specifically forces, motion, and energy.  Physical Science III will have a physics and earth and space science emphasis, specifically astronomy.
