Welcome to Limnology!

NOTE: Limnology will not be offered during the 2020-2021 school year. Generally it is on a rotation with Oceanography. However, offering it is also dependent upon student interest.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

LIMNOLOGY
Grade level
: 11-12
Prerequisite: Biology & Physical Science I or Chemistry with a C or better
Length: one quarter in block schedule

Limnology is the study of inland waters.  In this course, we will learn about the chemistry, physics, hydrology, and ecology of continental water systems.  Course topics may include the physics and chemistry of continental waters; movement of light, heat, and chemicals in water; groundwater; wetlands; rivers and streams; lakes; reservoirs; watersheds; biotic communities such as algae, plankton, benthos, fishes, etc.; and human effects on inland water systems.  This course offers opportunities for numerous field and laboratory investigations.  Yes, we will be making weekly/bi-weekly field trips to the area creek, as well as handle/study live freshwater organisms such as newts, zebra fish, and fairy shrimp.  Students will learn to make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving.
